Number three on our list is New Edge Networks. New Edge is a national player found predominantly in metro areas. New Edge is large enough to be a strong player but still small enough to treat customers like a small company. When it first came out mostly used as a way for high capacity networks to operate. Such places as college campuses or larger companies were using the gigabit Ethernet. Starting in April of 2009 these gigabit Ethernets where beginning to be placed into personal computers that consumers could buy. But most of these systems seem to not be able to handle the speed of the network. The information age has brought about some pretty cool technology such as T1 Lines, DS3’s, Metro Ethernet and GigE Connectivity for businesses as well as homes. With that being said, complexities are also prevalent with such technological leaps. If you have ever searched out telecommunications providers, you may have found that not only is the technology somewhat confusing, but choosing a carrier can be difficult as well. Not all carriers and technology are alike. Each have their strengths and weaknesses in many areas. Some technology costs very little and some cost enough to make multiple mortgage payments. Many customers are extremely price sensitive and cannot afford the cost of a T1 which can be as much as 20 times more expensive than a full T1 connection. Most people don't realize that a DSL connection can be just as fast as a T1 at 1.5Mbps. The shortcoming of DSL is that it is oversubscribed. This means there is a finite amount of bandwidth available and a customer's speed can drop if other customers in the neighborhood decide to use their service. SDSL (Synchronous DSL) is a business class DSL and is ranked as a higher priority than residential DSL or ADSL (Asynchronous DSL). This means it is not oversubscribed to the extent than ADSL and is subject to fewer bandwidth restrictions. In short, if price is your critical factor go with DSL. If reliability is the critical factor purchase a dedicated T1. Though this gigabit Ethernet is used by businesses mostly, the technology has only begun to be placed into personal computer as of April 2009. It's a difficult thing because other parts of the computer have a hard time running at that speed. So it's mostly a business used technology at present. |
